Papermaking
Sat 8/23, Sun 8/24 10:00 - 2:00pm
In this 2-day workshop you will have a hands-on introduction to western papermaking with a focus on building a DIY sustainable art practice. Using materials you can replicate at home you will repurpose everyday paper waste into fresh, usable sheets and various forms of paper art. You will learn the history of handmade paper, required equipment, technique, and more.
Day 1 will cover history of handmade paper, fibers and equipment, and traditional sheet-forming.
Day 2 will cover creative elements such as sculptural techniques, embossing, and inclusions such as botanical elements. You will leave the weekend with sheets of your own handmade paper and the ability to create paper at home.
Noëlle Cunningham specializes in the book arts with a focus in printmaking and papermaking. Inspired by prehistory, mythology and natural phenomena, Noëlle’s work aims to evoke the feeling of uncovering a hidden treasure. She is a graduate of Minneapolis College of Art & Design and has been living and working in Richmond VA since 2023.
Isa Diaz-Barriga is an artist and farmhand working out of Richmond Virginia. They are interested in the intersections between myth, material, memory, and environment, primarily creating works on and with handmade paper, using plant fibers and inclusions that embody ecological, cultural, and personal significance. Isa graduated in 2018 from Oberlin College with a BA in Studio Art and has since worked in education and sustainable agriculture while continuing to experiment and learn as much as they can about the art of papermaking.
All materials will be provided.
Papermaking is a wet process! Dress for mess and warm weather, bring waterproof boots if possible.
