Core Classes
Our Core Classes are informal and encourage experimentation; all students are welcome. In these classes, you’ll learn new techniques and improve your skills. Core Classes cover equipment and processes that we offer artist members; many students join as the studio as Artist Members after taking Core Classes.

Curious about screen printing? This is the intro class for you! Learn everything you need to make multiple prints of your design. You'll see how to coat and expose a screen, review types of images appropriate for screen printing, learn about proper setup, and clean up and start printing one-color images on paper.

Welcome to riso-town! Learn all about the basics of risograph printing and create prints using collaging, drawing and other analog techniques. Students will get hands-on with the machine and learn to independently operate, troubleshoot, and register their designs. Bring your sketchbook, old magazines, favorite markers and more! This class is great for beginners looking for an accessible entry into the medium -- no experience required!

An introduction to screenprinting on t-shirts and fabric in general, this class provides a foundation to screenprinting on a manual t-shirt press! This workshop will cover all the steps to printing on shirts from coating to reclaim, and participants will come out with all the knowledge they need to go out and start printing shirts on their own! We'll cover coating screens, designing images for fabric printing, burning and washing out screens, setting up the press and registering your design, printing and curing shirts, and how to clean out your screens to reuse them! If time allows, I will also demo two-color shirt printing on the press, for those who want to get a little more adventurous.
*NOTE: Blank shirts are not included with the class registration. Please plan to bring 10-15 blank light-colored t-shirts, totes or scrap fabric to experiment with during the workshop. Basic screen printing recommended as a prerequisite.

Learn to print full color photos, illustrations and designs with the faux CMYK riso printing method. Students will learn to use the Spectrolite app to separate their image into 4 color layers, showcasing the color blending capabilities of layering risograph inks. We’ll also go over how to operate the risograph and properly register your prints, a crucial step when printing faux cmyk on the riso. This method is Ideal for printing full-color photographs, scanned artwork (paintings, collages, etc.) and colorful digital illustrations. We'll use concepts of CMYK printing and "riso-ify" them to work with the unique ink colors riso has to offer, so this class is great for those interested in learning about basic digital design for riso printing!
