Community Work

We believe deeply in the power of printmaking to amplify the voices, stories and perspectives of our community.

For over 15 years, S23 has served as Richmond’s only community print shop to specialize in printmaking at the intersection of artistic voice and civic engagement.

We were founded in 2009, during a moment of rapid economic growth in the City of Richmond; within this context, we grew from a 400-sq-ft artist studio shared by 4 artists into a 16,000-sq-ft community arts space with 120+ artist members.

Today, we are proud to provide a brick and mortar space for artists of all backgrounds, regardless of economic means, to engage in a trusted creative community with 24/7 access to artist tools. Common values guide our artist community: We affirm the dignity and humanity of all people. We own what we make. We are all artists, no matter what we make. We steal processes, ideas, techniques and inspiration, but we don’t take other people’s belongings.

In order to ensure access to all Richmonders, regardless of economic means, we are committed to sliding scale membership rates and expanding our circles of engagement through free workshops, partnerships, school field trips and in-kind support to civic initiatives.

We believe in printmaking as an accessible, affordable means of mass production and tool for civic engagement. We provide discounted & in-kind printing support for community groups & advocacy initiatives, and regularly host arts & advocacy print days with our mobile print truck.

We are committed to providing accessible & free space for gathering, shared joy & building power. We host 3-5 free weekly community events in our events space for mission-aligned efforts and organizations. Our event space has become a vital space, welcoming over over 20,000 people through our doors each year & helping to anchor arts & culture at the intersection of civic voice & community care.
