Paper Casting Workshop - 1/17
Sat 1/17 10am-1pm
Instructor: Isa Diaz-Barriga
Paper Casting is an artistic process that uses pulp and pressed sheets of paper to create sculptural objects, low relief images, and textured surfaces. Students will learn the basics of one and two part mold making using sculpey polymer clay to capture high relief forms; how to use paper in two states –pulp and sheets– for sculptural purposes; and several techniques for approaching low relief work. Students can expect to walk away at least one small handmade mold, a paper object made from that mold, and one or more low relief/textured paper works. Please bring at least one small (2-3 inches square or less) object to cast with, textures or shapes you might like to capture, and your creative energy!
Isa Diaz-Barriga is an artist and farmhand working out of Richmond Virginia. They are interested in the intersections between myth, material, memory, and environment, primarily creating works on and with handmade paper, using plant fibers and inclusions that embody ecological, cultural, and personal significance. Isa graduated in 2018 from Oberlin College with a BA in Studio Art and has since worked in education and sustainable agriculture while continuing to experiment and learn as much as they can about the art of papermaking.
